Castor oil does something in a soap formula that no other ingredient quite replicates: it produces a dense, creamy, conditioning lather and simultaneously makes every other oil in the recipe lather better. It usually makes up a small percentage of a cold process soap formula, but remove it and the difference is immediately noticeable. The lather goes flat, watery, and thin. Castor oil is the ingredient that pulls everything together, and understanding why it works explains a lot about what makes a well-made natural bar feel the way it does.
What is castor oil and where does it come from?
Castor oil is a thick, pale yellow vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis), which grows across tropical and subtropical regions. It has been used in skincare and hair care for centuries, prized for its unusual texture and the way it behaves differently from most other plant oils.
That different behavior comes down to its chemistry. Castor oil is almost entirely composed of a single fatty acid: ricinoleic acid, which makes up roughly 85 to 95 percent of the oil. Ricinoleic acid is a hydroxyl fatty acid, a type that is rare in the plant kingdom and that gives castor oil its distinctive thick, viscous consistency and its unusual properties in both skincare and soapmaking.
Most plant oils are blends of several fatty acids in varying proportions. Castor oil's near-complete dominance by a single unusual fatty acid is what makes it behave the way it does, and what makes it so useful in a soap recipe where you need specific things to happen.
What does castor oil actually do inside a bar of soap?

Castor oil plays two distinct roles in cold process soapmaking, and both are essential.
The first is lather. Ricinoleic acid, when saponified (converted into soap through the reaction with lye), produces a particularly luxurious, dense foam with good staying power. It is not the big, fluffy bubbles you get from coconut oil, and it is not a creamy, low-bubble lather. It is something closer to the middle: a rich, silky foam that feels conditioning as you use it and does not dissipate quickly under running water.
The second role is what soapmakers call a lather booster. Castor oil has a unique ability to improve the lather produced by every other oil in the formula. When you add a small amount of castor oil to a recipe that also contains olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, all of those oils lather better than they would without it. This synergistic effect is one of the reasons castor oil shows up in almost every well-formulated cold process recipe, even in small amounts.
Together, these two properties are responsible for much of what people describe when they say a natural soap feels rich or luxurious compared to a basic commercial bar.
What does ricinoleic acid do for your skin during a wash?
Beyond what castor oil does for lather, ricinoleic acid has properties that benefit the skin directly.
Ricinoleic acid is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture toward the skin rather than just sitting on top of it or rinsing cleanly away. This is an unusual quality in a soap ingredient. Most of the skin-conditioning benefit from a natural soap comes from retained glycerin, a natural byproduct of saponification that stays in handmade bars but is extracted from commercial soap. Castor oil adds another layer of conditioning through ricinoleic acid, which contributes to the soft, non-stripped feeling skin has after a good natural bar rinses off.
Ricinoleic acid also has mild antimicrobial properties, which is part of why castor oil has historically been used in skin treatment. In a rinse-off soap the contact time is brief, but the antimicrobial character of ricinoleic acid does complement the cleansing action of the other oils in the formula.
Why do soap recipes use only a small amount of castor oil and not more?

Most cold process soap recipes use castor oil at around 5 to 10 percent of the total oil weight. That range is intentional, and going above it tends to create problems rather than benefits.
At higher concentrations, castor oil can make a soap bar tacky or soft. The same viscous quality that makes ricinoleic acid so useful at lower percentages becomes a liability when there is too much of it. The bar may not harden properly, may feel sticky in the hand, and may dissolve faster than a well-balanced formula should.
The 5 to 10 percent sweet spot is where castor oil delivers its lather and conditioning benefits without interfering with the hardness, longevity, and feel of the finished bar. This is a good illustration of why soap formulation is a craft. Every ingredient is present in a specific proportion for a reason, and adjusting one affects the behavior of all the others.
